In 1960, the Defense Communications Agency was created to manage the Defense Communications System. It’s said that “necessity is the mother of invention.”
After participating in two brutal world wars, the United States realized it needed a specialized communications agency to manage military information transmission more effectively. DCA advanced Defense Department communications from 1960 to 1991 by expanding from telephones, radar and wire to satellites, fiber optic cable, mega centers and hi-tech broadband internet demands.
As technology expanded so did DCA’s mission, and in 1991 it transitioned to the Defense Information Systems Agency to support the warfighter in all environments and under all threats – both physical and cyber.
