STORYLINE:
Israel's national rescue agency, Magen David Adom, put staff on high alert on Sunday after threats by Palestinian militants to carry out attacks in revenge for the killing by Israel of eight Palestinian civilians on a Gaza beach on Friday.
Magen David Adom raised the alert level to one below the highest level, doubling the number of ambulances on alert and increasing the number of medical staff.
Israeli police also raised the alert of their forces, Israel Army Radio reported, stopping vehicles and civilians at checkpoints in Jerusalem and in the West Bank town of Qalandya.
The Palestinian Islamic group, Hamas, called off a 16-month-old truce with Israel, following Friday's beach attack.
Palestinian militants fired about ten rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip early on Sunday, critically injuring one Israeli and nearly hitting a college in the southern Israeli town of Sderot, the army and rescue service said.
A hospital spokesman said the injured man's life was in danger.
Hamas' militant wing took responsibility for the rocket attacks, saying that they would continue until residents of Sderot evacuated the town in fear.
