We'd never accept placing a warning after a hazard in a workplace, so why do we accept it for pedestrians at traffic lights? The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile is an in-ground pedestrian light combined with a Tactile Ground Surface Indicator (TGSI), fitted to traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to immediately improve pedestrian safety and provide a large visual warning on the same side of the road as the pedestrian.
Until now, the visual Walk/Don't Walk signal has been a small red/green man or person symbol located across the road or tram track - on the other side of the hazard.
The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile fundamentally rethinks how visual information is provided to pedestrians at traffic signals and pedestrian crossings for roads, tramlines and train tracks. The in-ground pedestrian light can also be used on train and tram platforms and escalators to provide a visual warning of risks such as at the edge of a platform or an escalator. Arrows and crosses can be incorporated in the design.
A University evaluation and market research have found a strong business case and community support for LED Safety Tactiles. This video summarises the findings of the research and shows international examples of the use of LED Safety Tactiles. People that benefit include those that are short-sighted or sight-impaired, and people with a low vantage point in crowds, such as children and people in wheelchairs. Research findings suggest that in crowds, people have difficulty seeing through the crowd to observe a conventional Walk/Don't Walk pedestrian light/lantern. There is a risk that they will follow the crowd on to the road even if the pedestrian lights have changed to red.
