Shaun Jenkins, a Boston resident, was convicted in 2005 for the 2001 murder of his cousin, Stephen Jenkins. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. In 2021, significant prosecutorial misconduct came to light, including the withholding of exculpatory evidence and false representations by the prosecution. This led to the vacating of his conviction and his subsequent release.
The lead prosecutor during Shaun Jenkins' trial was Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Timothy J. Bradl. Prior to his role as ADA, Bradl served as a Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney, where he investigated and prosecuted numerous criminal cases, including murders, and handled appellate work before Massachusetts appellate courts. In Jenkins' case, ADA Bradl was responsible for presenting the Commonwealth's evidence against Jenkins. However, it was later revealed that critical exculpatory evidence was not disclosed to the defense, a violation of legal obligations that significantly impacted the trial's fairness.
In June 2023, Jenkins filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Boston, ADA Bradl, and other police officers, seeking compensation for the wrongful conviction and the misconduct that led to it. This lawsuit was settled in 2024 for an undisclosed sum.
