In June 2026, the Centre for a Smart Future (Sri Lanka) and iSocial (Bangladesh) hosted a webinar, Freedom and Fairness in Platform-Mediated Gig Work: Perspectives from Asia, exploring the realities of platform-mediated work across Asia as governments and workers debate the future of work in the platform economy.
Discussions included Meghal Perera (Colombo Urban Lab) on the intersection of climate and labour in Sri Lanka, including the impacts of extreme heat and rainfall on gig workers; Dr. Ananya Raihan (iSocial Bangladesh) on worker precarity, algorithmic control, and value extraction in the platform economy; Dr. Towfiqul Islam Khan (Centre for Policy Dialogue) on the need for legal recognition and social protection mechanisms for platform workers; Tuy Sythieng (Cambodian Food and Service Workers' Federation) on the experiences of food delivery workers in Cambodia, including barriers to worker organising and gendered challenges; and Prof. Vera Trappmann (University of Leeds) on global trends in platform worker protest and collective action.
