Berkeley Lab physicist Robert Cahn shares his love for element 43, technetium, a unique radioactive metal that exists in a number of isotopes. One of these isotypes, technetium-99, has revolutionized medical imaging technology thanks to its short-lived, high-energy subtype: metastable technetium-99. Tc-99m has a half-life of just six hours and is now put to work in millions of nuclear medicine procedures every year.
Technetium was discovered in 1937 by Emilio Segrè and Carlo Perrier from a piece of molybdenum made at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is produced synthetically for medical use and naturally by nuclear reactions by some stars and in trace amounts on Earth as a product of radioactive ores.
