Whereas in the case of silver amalgam, esthetically it is not very pleasant. So the natural appearance is more comfortable where in the case of white filings. In the case of silver amalgam fillings, the tooth requires more amount of drilling of the tooth whereas in the teeth coloured fillings, it requires the layer by layer application. It does not require much more amount of the drilling of the tooth. So the less drilling concepts is applicable in the case of teeth coloured fillings. Different kinds of bonding are available like mechanical bonding, chemical bonding, mechanical and chemical bonding. Silver amalgam fillings are by mechanical bonding, whereas glass ionomer cements are by chemical bonding and composite fillings are both by , mechanical and chemical bonding. In case of mechanical bonding, we have to drill the tooth as much as possible in order to retain the fillings. In any case of filling, the bonding barrier or the base protection is important to protect the tooth to prevent it from sensitivity. In case of composite filling, it requires more skill and the reshape of the tooth is very easy to the filling concepts. The dentists can use the reshape of the tooth by using the white fillings. Whereas in case of Silver amalgam fillings, it requires much more compressions and adaptability to the tooth surface. The next is the durability of the filling. Silver amalgam fillings are much more durable than the teeth coloured fillings, because of their compressive strength, whereas teeth coloured fillings, are less durable than the silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam fillings dos not require ore skill compared to the teeth coloured fillings. Teeth coloured fillings are much more sensitive to the moisture. During the filling, the dentist should be much concerned about the isolation of the tooth. If there is any contact of the saliva to the tooth, then the durability and the adaptation of the tooth will be lost. So there should be proper isolation. Silver amalgam fillings are more economical compared to the teeth coloured fillings. White fillings are more expensive when compared to the Silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam fillings have more allergic reaction to the gums or the other soft tissues of the patient. So it causes gum tattooing. White fillings or teeth coloured fillings are much more comfortable to the patients. When the patient uses this kind of fillings, there is no reaction or there I very less reaction to the patient. Cosmetic filings can cause hypersensitivity to the patients whereas silver amalgam fillings, will cause mercury reactions like microleakage because of the leakage of the mercury and cause discoloration and may cause intentional root canal treatment to the patient who are having silver amalgam fillings over a period of time. Also marginal fracture is seen in silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam fillings are used in endodontically treated tooth. Composite fillings can also be used, but Silver amalgam fillings are much stronger compared to the composite white fillings.
