Synopsis: “Painting” is a musical interpretation of a human’s shifting gaze over a painting that contains various unique elements. I developed compositional strategies to emulate eye movements such as staring at one area, gradually moving from one area to the next, darting across the painting, and peripheral vision.

Chord clusters serve as elements of the “Painting”, fading in and out gradually. Harmony changes perpetually and is constantly ambiguous, yet the rules in which clusters are created remain the same throughout the piece. Swells occur both in dynamics and through gradual fluctuations between slightly consonant and slightly dissonant clusters.

The time organization of material in the piece is determined by intuition in order to imitate human nature. When humans read words across a book, it is never done at an even pace.

Lastly, when viewing a painting there is no final destination, so I tried to keep the piece very open-ended.
