FAQ – Airstream Departure & Tank Care
Q: Why do you flush the black tank multiple times?
A: Airstream sensors are notorious for getting "gunked up." I like to flush the tank 2-3 times until the water runs clear. This prevents odors and ensures the sensors stay accurate while the trailer is in storage.
Q: Is the 50-amp cable really that heavy?
A: Yes! A 50-amp cord is significantly heavier and less flexible than a 30-amp. It requires some shoulder and lower back strength to coil it tightly enough to fit into the Airstream’s side storage compartment, especially in cold weather.
Q: What is the most important part of the hitching process?
A: Beyond the ball being locked, it’s the Breakaway Cable and Safety Chains. The chains should be crossed under the shank to create a "cradle" in case of a disconnect, and the breakaway cable ensures the trailer brakes engage if it ever becomes fully detached.
Q: Why do you close the propane tanks before driving?
A: While it's a debated topic, closing the tanks is the safest practice to prevent gas leaks in the event of a road accident or a tire blowout that could sever a propane line.
Q: How was solo camping at Bogue Chitto?
A: Highly recommend! The pads are spacious, the water is clean, and it's a very manageable park for a solo Airstreamer to navigate. They also have great bike trails, a frisbee golf course, and lots of nature to explore.
