In 1956, American physicist John Bardeen won the Nobel Prize in Physics for co-inventing the transistor. At the ceremony, he brought only one of his three children. Sweden’s King jokingly scolded him, and Bardeen promised to bring them all “next time.” Sixteen years later, in 1972, he became the only person in history to win two Physics Nobels, the second for the theory of superconductivity — and arrived with all three children, keeping his word.
