Voodoo (or vodoun in the Fon language) is an animist religion originating in Benin, deeply rooted in the culture of the Fon, Ewe and Adja peoples. Born in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries), it is based on the veneration of spirits (loa or vodoun), ancestors and the forces of nature, with Mawu as supreme creator deity. Contrary to Western clichés associating voodoo with witchcraft, it is a structured spirituality, advocating harmony with nature and respect for ancestors.
Main features :
Pantheon: Includes deities such as Sakpata (earth), Hèviosso (thunder), Mami Wata (water) or Dan (snake, wealth).

Rituals: Dances, songs, offerings (animals, fruits), sacrifices and divinatory consultations (Fá) to communicate with the spirits.

Syncretism: In Benin, voodoo often coexists with Christianity or Islam, many practicing a religious syncretism.

Sacred places: Ouidah, the world cradle of voodoo, is home to temples (such as that of the pythons) and the Sacred Forest of Kpassè.

Cultural significance :
National Holiday: Since 1993, January 10 celebrates Vodun Days, attracting followers and visitors for vibrant ceremonies in Ouidah and Porto-Novo.

World Heritage: Exported by the slave trade, voodoo influences practices in Haiti, Brazil (Candomblé), Cuba (Santería) and Louisiana. He has about 50 million followers globally.

Recognition: Official religion since 1996, Voodoo is a pillar of identity, promoted by the government to enhance tourism and heritage.

Reality vs Prejudice :
Far from Hollywood stereotypes (zombies, black magic), voodoo is a philosophy of life, focused on community, spiritual healing and connection with the universe. The grigris (ritual objects) serve to protect or heal, not to harm. Sacred forests, protected by beliefs, even play an ecological role by preserving biodiversity.
