While PHEVs offer the benefit of both electric-only driving for short distances and the flexibility of a traditional engine for longer journeys, making them potentially appealing in India's driving conditions, we believe that tax structures remain a major hurdle. PHEVs are currently taxed similarly to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles at a combined 43% GST (28% GST + 15% compensation cess), while Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) enjoy a much lower 5% GST. This significant tax difference makes PHEVs less attractive from a cost perspective, potentially hindering their mass-market adoption and limiting the benefits of lower running costs and emissions compared to traditional cars.
