When doing improvs on an existing tune, one simple technique I'll often use is what I call a "wrapper." Essentially, I'll improvise a melody or ostinato, and wrap it around the existing song. There are many arrangements of songs even in the published world that basically just use this technique because it's so easy and effective. One of my favorite things about doing these spooky Christmas songs is trying to find wrappers that are as different as possible from the source material. Wreck the Halls is one of my favorite pairings that I've done to date.
