Spitting may seem like a small issue, but in the workplace it creates real health and safety concerns. This OSHA Safety Talk explains why *spitting is forbidden* on worksites and in facilities, and how maintaining proper hygiene helps protect workers from illness, contamination, and unnecessary hazards.
OSHA does not have a specific “no spitting” standard, but several regulations make clear the need to maintain sanitary working conditions. *29 CFR 1910.141 (Sanitation)* requires employers to provide a clean and sanitary workplace, and spitting can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases. In environments such as food processing, healthcare, or manufacturing, spitting can lead to contamination that violates OSHA standards, FDA requirements, and even public health codes.
In this talk, we cover:
1️⃣ How saliva can transmit viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.
2️⃣ The risk of contaminating surfaces, equipment, or PPE through spitting.
3️⃣ Why spitting is strictly prohibited in clean rooms, kitchens, and production areas.
4️⃣ How spitting can create slip hazards if it lands on walking surfaces.
5️⃣ Employer responsibilities to enforce sanitary rules under OSHA’s sanitation standard.
6️⃣ Worker responsibility to follow good hygiene practices and respect shared spaces.
7️⃣ Disciplinary measures that can be taken when workers ignore hygiene policies.
Good hygiene is part of good safety. A single act of spitting can expose co-workers to illness, damage company reputation, and lead to regulatory citations if it results in contamination of food, beverages, or sterile work areas. Supervisors must communicate clearly that spitting is prohibited and post signs in key areas to remind employees.
