NASA’s Webb Just Revealed Extreme Cosmic Collisions in a Nearby Star System
Some planetary systems are far more violent than they appear. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is helping astronomers investigate extreme debris disks—dusty environments around young stars that may be shaped by enormous collisions between rocky worlds.
In a study published in October 2026, researchers examined 21 extreme debris disks using observations from Webb and the retired Spitzer Space Telescope. By analyzing the minerals in the dust, scientists identified evidence consistent with different types of impacts. Silica-rich disks suggest extremely energetic collisions involving Mars-sized bodies, while other disks appear consistent with less energetic impacts involving Moon-sized objects.
These findings offer a new way to investigate how planets form, collide, and evolve. They may also help scientists understand the violent early history of our own solar system, including the giant impact thought to have formed the Moon.
In this video, we explore what Webb actually observed, how astronomers infer collisions from cosmic dust, and why these discoveries matter for the search to understand other planetary systems.
