In 2012, the Charaka Handloom Cooperative in rural Karnataka, India, shifted from using synthetic textile dyes to dye fabrics to natural dyes made from ingredients like betel nut syrup and pomegranate skin. This shift was motivated by the environmental impact of synthetic dyes on water bodies and the textile industry's significant contribution to pollution. Using betel nut (supari) to dye clothes and fabrics reduced water pollution caused by textile dyeing. Betel nut syrup, previously discarded as waste, was harnessed for its natural dye properties, providing additional income for farmers. Natural dye consultant Jagada Rajappa explains that while challenges exist, technological advancements, such as the use of enzymes and reduced water consumption, can address these issues. This Eco-friendly approach used to dye clothes and fabrics contributes to a more sustainable and responsible textile industry.
