Friday marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The United Nations General Assembly first designated November 25 for the annual occasion in 1999. The aim is to raise public awareness of the fact that women are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of abuse, while promoting efforts to prevent and end violence against women and girls worldwide.
