New Mexico grapples with rising juvenile gun arrests amid calls for reform

Описание: In New Mexico, a troubling trend has emerged as 288 children have been arrested this year for misconduct involving firearms, equating to a child being arrested for a gun-related charge nearly every three out of four days.

Benjamin Baker, the senior public safety advisor at the governor's office, highlighted the issue, stating, "We need meaningful legislation that addresses what a decades-long inattention to our juvenile code, which addresses how we treat, how we identify, treat, and rehabilitate."

Baker testified to New Mexico legislators on Dec. 1, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The statistics have been monitored since Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared gun violence a public emergency in September 2023.
