When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, you’ve been told a bunch of lies.
You don’t have to quit preparing the meal cold turkey but keep these tidbits in mind.
It’s a myth that you need to cook the turkey at 350 degrees.
Several foodies the HuffPost spoke with put it like this; the longer you cook the bird, the drier it gets.
That’s why a few of them recommended a slightly higher temperature of 425.
Just make sure the meat thermometer clocks in at 165 degrees Fahrenheit once you think it’s ready.
Another myth is that it’s a mistake to stuff the bird.
Sure, undercooked stuffing can make you sick because it’s got raw eggs inside a raw bird.
It also needs to hit a certain temperature to be safe to eat.
Problem is, the turkey breasts get dry when the stuffing heats up.
So, heat up the stuffing beforehand so it’s not cold when you stuff the bird.
If you dig in right away, you’re doing it wrong!
Culinary gurus tell HuffPost you shouldn’t cut into the turkey right away.
Let it rest for about 25 minutes and use the pan juices over the sliced meat.
If you baste beforehand, you’ll end up with soggy turkey skin.
It’s a myth that a big turkey dinner makes you tired.
Sure, turkey has a protein called tryptophan which acts like a natural sedative, but you need to eat a lot of it to get the effects.
A health expert tells ABC News that your food coma is probably the result of eating a huge number of calories – the whole meal, not just the turkey.
Skipping the sweets because you’re scared of breaking out is a myth.
According to experts ABC spoke with, blame acne on hormone changes, not sweet or fried food.
Just make sure to wash those greasy hands before touching your face.
