“Can you see me now? Mom”

Описание: If in 1996, one had told trainer Keiu Ninomiya that the chubby colt standing before him would one day represent Japan on the greatest international stage, the Arc, and deliver a performance of historic significance, he might have totally dismissed it
Yet history unfolded differently
In 1999, El Condor Pasa arrived in Paris as the overwhelming race favorite, taking on Europe’s elite on equal terms and finishing a valiant second. In that moment, the ambition of Japanese racing, to conquer the Arc, was no longer a distant fantasy, but a tangible, enduring dream etched into the sport’s history
Within this broader narrative, Nakayama Festa is in a uniquely compelling position
There are rumors that during the early moments of frustration with Nakayama Festa’s temperament, Ninomiya consulted with Ikee Yasutoshi, the trainer of Stay Gold. After knowing more about Stay Gold, Ninomiya reportedly remarked to owner Shinichi Izumi: “This is a horse that could rival El Condor Pasa”
Whether true or not, Nakayama Festa ultimately honored that sentiment

I chose an emotional approach with this video, so I won't do that under the description. Rather, I will focus on other parts of Nakayama:
Unlike many elite stallions, Nakayama Festa did not leave a particularly influential legacy at stud. His pedigree, while intriguing, stood somewhat at odds with the prevailing direction of Japanese breeding, after Japanese racing step into the path of high-speed racing
His lineage traces back to Ribot and His Majesty. While His Majesty was only a modest performer on the track, he became an exceptional sire. This genetic foundation helps explain Nakayama Festa’s racing profile. He excelled under demanding conditions—most notably when finishing second in the 2010 Arc, as well as in testing environments such as Hanshin Racecourse and on rain-affected ground of the derby. His performances consistently suggested a horse capable of sustaining effort under unorthodox condition rather than relying purely on speed
If a Japanese-trained horse is to win the Arc for the first time, it may well be a horse in Nakayama Festa’s mold: not necessarily the most celebrated domestically, but one whose attributes align perfectly with the demands of Longchamp

The difficulty of the Arc for Japanese runners has been widely debated. the most common explanations I saw tend to focus on surface conditions and the undulating course layout. While these factors are undeniably important, they are, in many ways, only surface-level explanations
Don't get me wrong, Japanese horses will definitely perform much better in firm ground. But to understand its core, the Arc is a race that demands comprehensive excellence even for European horses. It is not merely a test of speed or stamina in isolation, but a synthesis of pace adaptability, physical resilience, tactical awareness, and sustained finishing power

From a sectional perspective, it's fundamentally due to the high load of chasing in the midsection. It's a tough race where, on a bad track, you have to run the slow sections in the high 12-second range, proceed through the midsection at even pace or below in the mid-12-second range or faster, and then, from there, unleash even more instantaneous acceleration in the final stretch. The overall energy distribution resembles, to some extent, races like the Takarazuka Kinen, but under significantly more punishing conditions

This creates a structural challenge for Japanese horses. Modern Japanese breeding has increasingly emphasized in specialization, optimization for certain racecourse. Even among the many European champion horses, many of them still struggle in the Arc, and it's not like Japanese horses are the only ones facing a tough situation. It's just, if it is so testing even for European horses on their comprehensive ability, then it is only getting more demanding for Japanese

Additionally, European racing places greater emphasis on positional battles and direct competition between horses, rather than battles against time. This introduces a tactical dimension that can be particularly taxing for international challengers. Targeted pressure during the race can gradually erode a horse’s stamina reserves — something that is often less pronounced in Japanese racing environments. So many times you see the Japanese runners begin in a bad position, fail to get into the ideal place. And their position just gets increasingly worse as the race went on. This is something general audiences don’t tend to see if they only look at the result or only the home stretch

This context helps explain Nakayama Festa’s near-success in 2010. Not only was he on a rise, he possessed the physical attributes required for the race, but he also entered without the same level of tactical targeting faced by more prominent contenders. His performance was a convergence of ability, suitability, and circumstance
