Do you know why Kea are so endangered?
Of course, introduced predators play a big role in their decline - as with most of NZ's native and endemic species 🐾
But they are also highly susceptible to lead poisoning, and share a very sad history of persecution by humans. 150,000 Kea were killed because a bounty that was put on them...
These days, the tables have turned. Kea are now a protected species.
But their numbers will only recover if we continue to remove lead from their environment and eradicate or suppress introduced predators 📈
It's a big ask, but the team at Kea Conservation Trust are working hard to make this happen
