One of the major structure external to cell wall in Bacteria is flagella. It is the locomotory appendages. Electron microscope study reveals that bacterial flagella are composed of three parts- the Flagellar Filament, the Basal Body, and the Hook. The basal body is composed of four Rings ( L ring, P ring, S ring, M ring) and Central Rod ( Proximal rod, Distal rod). According to the arrangement of flagella distribution the bacteria may be four types- Monotrichous, Amphitrichous, Lophotrichous, Peritrichous.
