Snorkel: Shallows.

Описание: One afternoon in spring, Lulu, King and I, set out for a snorkel and dive. Prior to this outing, King had been out a handful of times but this was the first time that I had taken to filming him. Filming can be time-consuming and I don't always record my/our outings.

During King's maiden snorkel, the conditions were less than ideal and the area we were in had stronger currents with choppy water - not to mention that I had to commandeer young nephew's fins because one of mine ripped haha But today was a good day for his snorkeling as he was already familiar with this area as I had brought him a couple of times prior.

While Lulu headed off down the bays to look for fish to spear, I sat on the reef as King got settled into the water. A couple months back, I had dislocated a finger on my dominant hand and that had made a lot of things difficult if not near impossible to do - like pulling my booties on and strapping my fins on comfortably let alone gripping my 'kina tool,' (mum's roast pork fork hahaha). I still can't pull them on properly but when I love the things I do, I'll endure and persevere.

The water still had a bit of small swell before calming down before slack tide and so, King picked our entry point which was quite shallow but it was important to ensure his confidence and giving him control over little things like this were essential confidence boosters. When King found his first kina on his own, that was my cue to get in.

KingBing is a young teenager male trying to figure out the transition from childhood to early adulthood and I remember my time as a teen - absolute horrible but it's where I learnt the most valuable lessons about life, others and especially of myself. King doesn't know how to swim but he has the courage to get in there, give it a go and he also trusts me. We're working our way towards more confidence in the water which I believe he has, we just need to work on the swimming part because pool lessons were not his thing hahaha I told him, if you don't learn in a pool, you will learn out here. I have always believed in the power of nature to teach you what you need to learn and know about yourself. If you ever find yourself out of respect for yourself, others or the world in general - the ocean will either teach you or remind you.

King picked his sacks of kina while I supplemented here and there but mostly I just floated around and took it pretty easy - it was a bit too shallow for my liking and I complained to my cousin and the boys' other aunty that she needs to come out to watch King hahaha

Eventually, Lulu snorkeled in with a parore on his waist and we called it a day.

I have yet to come to terms with spearfishing even though I have a speargun - it is odd because I used to fish on rod and reel but when I am in the water like this, fish follow me around and I end up feeding them and it's like I have made friends. I feel like the pied piper.

Learning lessons from the ocean.
