രാമായണ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ശ്രീരാമ ഭക്തനായ കനക മഹർഷി ഈ മലയിൽ വസിച്ചിരുന്നുവത്രെ,
ശ്രീരാമൻ ലങ്കാ യുദ്ധത്തിന് ശേഷം അയോദ്ധ്യയിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോകും വഴി ഇവിടം സന്ദർശിക്കുമെന്ന് കനക മഹർഷിക്ക്‌ രാമൻ വാക്ക് കൊടുത്തത് പ്രകാരം മഹർഷി കാത്തിരിക്കുകയും അത് നടക്കാത്തതിനാൽ നിരാശനായ മഹർഷി സ്വീകരണത്തിന് ഒരുക്കിയ കനകമടക്കമുള്ള ദ്രവ്യങ്ങളും കമണ്ഡലവും മലയിൽ കമഴ്ത്തി വച്ചു,
ഈ മഹർഷിയുടെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് കനകമല എന്ന നാമം കിട്ടിയത് എന്നു ഒരു ഐതീഹം....

ഇസ്ലാം മത പ്രബോധനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി 1300വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ഇറാഖിലെ കുഫിയയിൽ നിന്നും വന്ന അലിയ്യുൽ കൂഫി (ഖ്വ : ) മഹാനവറുകൾ അന്നത്തെ ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ അനുമതിയോട് കൂടി ഈ മലയിലെ ഗുഹയിൽ വസിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ ഏക മകളുടെ മാറാ രോഗം ചികിൽസിച്ചു ഭേദമാക്കിയെന്നും ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള സ്ഥലം (ഇന്ന് പെരിങ്ങത്തൂർ ജുമാമസ്‌ജിതും കബർസ്ഥാനും ) ആരാധനയ്ക്കായി ദാനം നൽകിയെന്നുമാണ് ചരിത്രം.

ലോകപ്രശസ്ത ചിന്തകനും ശ്രീ നാരായണ ഗുരു ശിഷ്യനുമായ നിത്യ ചൈതന്യയതി ഗുരുവിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിൽ കനകശിയിലുള്ള മലയായതിനാലാണ് കനകമല എന്ന നാമം ലഭിച്ചതെന്നാണ്,
യതി ഗുരുവിന് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലമായിരുന്നു കനകമല,
മുനി നാരായണ പ്രസാദ് ഗുരു ഇവിടെ കുട്ടികൾക്ക് അധ്യാക്ഷരം കുറിക്കാനും ഇവിടെ ക്യാമ്പ് ചെയ്യാനും തുടങ്ങി, ലോകനിലവാരത്തിലുള്ള ചിന്തകൻമാർ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന സെമിനാറുകളും പഠനക്യാമ്പുകളും മലയിൽ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി ഇതോടു കൂടി മലയുടെ പ്രസിദ്ധി ഇന്നത്തെ തലമുറയിൽ വർധിക്കുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി , കൂടാതെ പുരാതന ഗുഹ , നീരുറവ കാണുവാനും മലയിലെ പ്രകൃതി ഭംഗി ആസ്വദിക്കുവാനും ആളുകൾ എത്തിതുടങ്ങി

Kanakamalai was the favorite place of Yati Guru.
