As classically trained players we try to play on top of or in slight anticipation of the beat. In popular music styles that's a big no-no. Why? Because music that's supposed to groove will end up sounding rushed, frantic, or at best just a bit too square. Laying back in the pocket means playing ever so slightly behind the placement of the beat. Learn how to master the pocket so that you can lock in to your band's tightest grooves.
