Blessed Mary Frances Schervier (1819–1876) was a German nun whose life was marked by deep compassion for the poor, the sick, and the forgotten. Born into a wealthy industrialist family, she chose a very different path — one of simplicity, sacrifice, and service. Seeing the suffering around her, especially during times of disease and poverty, she responded with courage and faith.
In 1845, Blessed Mary Frances founded the Poor Sisters of St. Francis with four companions. Their mission was clear: to care for those no one else wanted to help. The sisters nursed the sick during deadly outbreaks of cholera and smallpox, risking their own lives out of love for Christ. Their work soon spread beyond Germany, and sisters were later sent to the United States, where they cared for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War.
By the time of her death, the community had grown to over 2,500 sisters worldwide, a powerful sign of how one person’s love can change the world. Beatified in 1974, Blessed Mary Frances reminds us that true holiness is found in humble service, generosity, and seeing Jesus in the suffering of others.
