"The Manhattan Minstrel" Eddy Davis playing and singing a "Hokkem Tune" by Morton. When I was 4 or 5 years old my family lived as caretakers for an enormous Farm/Ranch on the "Banks Of The Wabash River. in the great state of Indiana. By that time it was owned by "Purdue University". It was originally built by a very rich man by the name David Ross. Mr. Ross was responsible for many Businesses and Hospitals around Lafayette, Indiana. (Ross Aide Sanitarium - Ross Gear) The list goes on and on) Our place was known as "Ross Camp". Students from Purdue would come out and practice "Surveying" all over the many acres. The story goes on and on, but I at that young age had found all these "78-RPM" records and use to walk around humming and singing them all the time. My favorites were Johnny Bond - Mildred Bailey and Jelly Roll this song and the flip side Hyena Stomp. It is performed on Davis' Custom OME 12' head - 17 fret neck Tenor Banjo
Billy Goat starts out MAJOR in Eb. The 2 chords involved are the V and the I OR (Bflat7 and Eflat). Breaks are also involved -- When it starts there are 2 Bflat notes played in Charston Rhythm, then 2 Bflat chords -- then Similar, 2 bflat notes then 2 Eflat chords. The song is in 8 bar choruses. The 8 bars ending Bflat7 to Eb. Jelly does this for 3 or 4 choruses and then he moves the whole thing to the RELATIVE MINOR -- or C MINOR. the song then JAMS a similar pattern in Cminor. Starting on the G7 chord to the Cminor chord. Every now and then he swings that pattern in stead of the Charleston pattern. Go on try it -- You'll LOVE IT. Let me know how it works for you. OH, don't forget the BLEETING (Baa-aa-aa) Good Luck Eddy
