On a foggy morning in Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur, Mexico I took a short walk along the fishing docks to see what birds were around.
Normally my work as a National Geographic certified photo instructor takes me to wild places like Antarctica, the Arctic, and Southeast Alaska. But today I had a little free time between expeditions aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird, so I decided to explore a very different kind of wildlife habitat: a busy fishing harbor.
It turns out these docks are full of birds.
Brown Pelicans perched on fishing boats, Turkey Vultures circling overhead, Ospreys hunting along the shoreline, and Great Blue Herons quietly stalking along the dock. It’s a fascinating example of wildlife adapting to the human landscape of the Anthropocene.
During the walk I also logged observations for Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird project, one of the largest citizen science biodiversity databases in the world.
Thanks for joining me on this little birding walk around Puerto San Carlos.
