In the 2000s, New Line Cinema had the rights to make an Iron Man film. However, the CEO let the rights lapse when they deemed that it was unrealistic to make a film about a flying suit because the suit was too heavy to fly.

In this video, I present a rough estimate on the mass of the Iron Man suit by making a number of assumptions about various aspects of the suit such as the thickness of the suit, the alloy used to make the suit, and the density of that alloy.

📝 Connection to research project
This video is produced as part of an outreach project "Exploring the Physics of Superheroes". This is a new outreach project that allowed students to experience the excitement of superheroes whilst learning about the physics that make such stories possible. The project was managed by Midlands Science and delivered by physicist Dr. Barry Fitzgerald (BW Science and The Superhero Scientist), who has done extensive research in this area.
