Her hair had about 6+ months of grow out, with darker roots and very blonde mids and ends. Instead of doing a traditional balayage refresh, we decided to lean into something a little different: modern chunky highlights inspired by early 2000s foiling techniques.
The challenge?
AI hair photos often ignore real hair density, contrast, and maintenance. So the goal here was to merge AI inspiration with wearable colour that still feels bold but balanced.
In this video I show the entire foiling process, including:
• Sectioning for chunky foil placement
• How to combine highlights + lowlights for dimension
• Controlling contrast on very blonde mids and ends
• Balancing bold stripes with softness
• Adjusting inspiration photos to suit the client’s natural preferences
This is a great technique for clients who want something trend-forward but still wearable, especially if they’re bored of traditional balayage.
