The contraceptive implant is a popular form of long-acting, reversible contraception.
It consists of a small rod containing the hormone etonogestrel, a type of progesterone.
This rod is designed for subdermal implantation in the non-dominant arm, as shown in this image.
Once implanted, it effectively prevents pregnancy for approximately three years.
The implant can be removed at any time upon the woman’s request, and fertility typically returns to normal within a few weeks after removal.
It is indicated for contraception in nulliparous women, adolescents, breastfeeding mothers, and can also be used as a contraceptive option during the postpartum period.
The implant prevents pregnancy through three major mechanisms.
It inhibits ovulation by disrupting the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.
It thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate.
And it thins the endometrial lining, making it less suitable for embryo implantation.
However, there are certain contraindications to using the contraceptive implant, including pregnancy, liver disease such as cirrhosis or liver tumors, breast cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, and known hypersensitivity to the implant's components.
The pregnancy rate with the implant is around 0.05%, slightly lower than that of intrauterine contraceptive devices.
Common side effects may include the following.
Menstrual irregularities.
Amenorrhea, or absence of menstruation.
Breast tenderness.
Mild weight gain.
Acne.
Headache.
Abdominal pain.
Lastly, some women may experience mild to moderate discomfort at the implantation site, but this typically subsides within a few days.
