The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the anodic half-reaction in water splitting and metal–air batteries. It generates O₂ from H₂O (in acid) or OH⁻ (in base) but proceeds by a four‐electron transfer that is kinetically sluggish. Efficient OER is crucial for renewable energy devices, but its slow rate makes it a major efficiency bottleneck.
Tafel equation: At high overpotential, the Butler–Volmer kinetics simplify to a log-linear relationship: η = a + b·log₁₀(j) (or η = b·log₁₀(j/j₀)). Here, b is the Tafel slope (in V/decade). A Tafel plot (η vs log j) yields a straight line, whose slope b and intercept a characterize the kinetics.
