In September 1944, one of the most unusual surrenders of World War II took place. German General Botho Henning Elster surrendered nearly 20,000 German troops to advancing U.S. forces in France. Instead of humiliation or punishment, General George S. Patton ordered Elster to be treated with dignity and respect.
Patton believed that honoring professional soldiers—even enemies—could weaken German morale and encourage further surrenders across the collapsing Wehrmacht. This calculated act of respect helped produce one of the largest German capitulations to U.S. forces during the war and reinforced Patton’s belief that psychology and dignity were powerful weapons.
