Here, we take a look at Garmin's new Smart Glide™ technology, which is now available in the recent update to their G3X Touch software (v. 8.91). The Smart Glide feature will provide assistance in the event of engine failure, helping the pilot navigate to an airport within glide range. And, when paired with a compatible Garmin autopilot, the new function can automatically engage the autopilot and pitch for the aircraft’s best glide speed while simultaneously navigating the aircraft within the vicinity of the selected airport so the pilot can execute an approach and landing. Pilots can install a button dedicated to Smart Glide, or simply hold the 'Direct-to' button for two seconds to activate the new function. Once activated, Smart Glide will recommend a nearby airport estimated to be within glide range and automatically create a direct-to route.
Along with the addition of Smart Glide™, the G3X Touch 8.91 software will also:
• Add the ability to simultaneously arm the flight director VNAV, along with GP or GS mode
• Add the ability to touch PFD AOA field to temporarily mute audio alerts
• Add the display of GPS navigator VNAV TOD/BOD positions on map
• Add the display of density altitude on PFD when on the ground
