Cham people are indigenous people who have been living in
Vietnam for centuries. They are the descendants of the ancient
Champa kingdom. Through many historical ups and downs,
nowadays, Cham population remain a small part of Vietnam,
living concentrated mostly in the two provinces of Ninh Thuan
and Binh Thuan.
The Cham highly value music and the making of its instruments.
Traditional musical instruments always play an important in the
role in the cultural and spiritual life of the Cham. Moreover, they
are the necessary tool to preserve the culture, tradition and
religious belief of the Cham. Traditional instruments are an
integral part of the Cham life, in term of daily rituals and festivals.
Cham traditional musical instruments are diverse and rich in style.
Here are some of examples of them:
Drums: Baranâng and Ginang, Hagar praong, Hagar asit,
Kaleng peng, Céng, Grong, Seng Kadét
Flutes: Raklé and Saranai
Acoustics: Campi, Kaping, Rabap, Kanyi
Due to many reasons, some of the above mentioned instruments
were permanently lost. The artisan production of traditional
musical instrument are disappearing and some of the methods to
make those instruments are slowly disappearing. Those who have
the knowledge of making traditional musical instruments are the
old generation and they remain as a very small number. For
economic reason and some others, young people nowadays are not
really eager to learn the traditional handicraft of making musical instrument, let alone play them. Thus, the knowledge of making
them as well as preserving, maintaining, and playing them has
reduced rapidly.
