The #Brother #EP-44 typewriter / hardcopy terminal is perhaps the easiest printing terminal to set up and use, as it operates on thermal paper (ribbons are optional) and the options are all in the menu (no "initialization sequences", no fiddling with jumpers — yeah, looking at you, Texas Instruments Silent 700 series), and it is truly bidirectional (not like the Brother EP-22 and many others that are "print only"). This video concerns how to #repair it:
Unfortunately, the write-head was stuck and refused to traverse the entire width of a page, getting stuck across the way. Wrongly I assumed the issue to be in the head itself — I took it apart and one wrong touch made a rain of tiny plastic wheels fall onto my face. I re-assembled it, and this is now possibly the only place in the internet where the internals of the Brother EP-44’s thermal write-head are shown. The issue turned out to be rust in the motor, made to move again with fine mechanics oil. In the very end, its terminal function is briefly demonstrated. Problem solved — enjoy!
