Exploring the Question of Whether Canadian Pension Funds Should Invest More Domestically

Описание: In this webinar, pension researcher Sebastien Betermier from McGill University presents findings from a GRI report that he co-authored with Keith Ambachtsheer from the University of Toronto and Chris Flynn from CEM Benchmarking. The focus of the research is to identify trends in how much Canadian pension funds invest in Canada.

The report also looks at pension funds in the U.S. and UK for comparison, and finds that domestic investment has decreased in all three countries over the last ten years. That said, there is still clearly a home bias for the Canadian funds.

The researchers also examined obstacles to domestic investment for the Canadian funds and considered whether more could be done to encourage it. The two main barriers identified were the risk of portfolio concentration that has always deterred more domestic investment, and the more recent phenomenon of increasing global competition for capital investment.

Betermier cited success stories from Australia and India, where public-private partnerships have driven significant investment, both domestic and international. He said that these could serve as a template for Canada.
