The Mary Manning Centre opened in 1984 to provide counselling services to childhood survivors of abuse. This year they changed their name to Child Abuse Prevention & Counselling Centre of Greater Victoria to better reflect the range of work that they do.
The Centre sees on average 200 children and their families each year. Because only sexually abused children are funded for counselling, about 40% of those children who experience other kinds of trauma are waitlisted for months. The Centre is hopeful that their new name will increase awareness about their work and, as a result, shorten waitlists.
