Pillar Community Innovation Awards
Four years ago, students at Western University's School of Dentistry brought Oral Health, Total Health's Sharing Smiles Day to London. They have demonstrated an innovative approach and strong commitment to the goals of the day: to have a fun-filled day where the attitudinal barriers between dental students and people with special needs can be removed, positive relationships fostered, and the importance of oral health emphasized. People who attend the event are motivated to follow through on suggestions from the dental students and become less fearful and less anxious to see a dentist. Dental care is one of the top unmet health care needs for people with intellectual disabilities who experience a greater incidence of oral disease than the wider population. Community Living London has been a partner in the event since it began. At the 4th annual Sharing Smiles Day at Western University in March 2013, over 75 people attended and received one-on-one care, attention and instruction for oral health.
