I needed a break today. I had not touched a brush in several weeks, so this is how I get back into it and stay connected to the practice.

Today I chose a random image from my reference collection and sat down to paint. These paintings will take anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple of hours and get me back into the groove. This one was a little over an hour with breaks.

This kind of work is about easing back in after time away from a brush. It helps keep me grounded and relaxed.

In this piece, I layered colour so the tones could show through one another the way they do in a bird’s feathers. This was a quick sketch and layering exercise. My focus was on the subject and on getting back into the groove. Strong composition and refinement still matter, but they were secondary here, as this was a practice piece.

Like all watercolours, it was best to let the paper dry before overworking it. This is where I chose to stop.

I have set the piece to music. The video runs about eighteen minutes and shows a shortened version of the process.
