Matcha lovers dive deep into the world of authentic handmade matcha bowls. Japanese pottery has one of the longest histories on the planet, spanning over 10,000 years. It began in what is known as the Jomon period around 14,000 BCE with cord-marked earthenware fired in open pits. In 2017, the Six Ancient Kilns were recognized as Japan Heritage sites, as each kiln is tied to locally sourced material such as clay, forests for wood firing, and rocks and minerals for natural glazes. I’ll be showing you modern interpretations of matcha bowls inspired by Japan's Six Ancient Kilns each with over 800 years of continuous production. These six kilns—Bizen, Seto, Shigaraki, Tamba, Tokoname, and Echizen—originated mainly in the 12th–13th centuries. Matcha bowls to evoke specific emotions tied to the wabi-sabi aesthetic —which admires imperfection, natural beauty and shows the passage of time. The types of matcha bowls one chooses to serve his or her guests reflects a certain feeling the host wants to convey. And each type of tea bowl has certain characteristics relating to these feelings of: being bold, showing casual warmth, having a samurai spirit. And used during certain seasons such as spring and autumn.
