Benthic Invertebrates are aquatic organisms without a backbone that live at the bottom of waterbodies. They are some of the best indicators we have for the health of waterbodies, which is why it's important to monitor their populations. For the past 5 years, the Athabasca Watershed Council (AWC) has been performing CABIN Testing in Alberta's Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains. This testing is to monitor the benthic invertebrates populations in these regions, and thus, the water quality.
The Athabasca Watershed Council (AWC), is a registered charity and not-for-profit organization formed in August 2009. We collaborate with academia, industries, environmental and stewardship groups, government at various levels, communities, Indigenous peoples and citizens to provide timely and credible information about the Athabasca River watershed.
