Shawn Achor is a very interesting young Psychologist and he has lots to say on Happiness. In this case however, I have chosen to focus on the first 2 min of his TED talk in which he relates a story from his childhood. There are a couple of things this clip help illustrate: i) stories are ‘psychologically privileged’ – they instantly engage the listeners’/readers’ attention; ii) stories make a presentation vivid and interesting; iii) first impressions are hugely important (it makes sense to start a talk with a story).
Quite apart from all this however, the way Achor tells the story is fantastic; the pace is brisk and he has interspersed the incident with a number of humorous asides which are simply amazing (notice the casualness with which they are delivered and how the pauses add to the overall effect – brilliant!)
