Here I stay at Lookout Mountain Lookout and visit Monogram Lake (8/25-8/26)
Staying in the lookout was a uniquely beautiful experience. We found ourselves almost entirely alone up there with the exception of two others who ended up camping below the lookout. Other than that, we had the company of a rambunctious resident mouse.
At Monogram Lake, we also found some great solidarity. Minus the bears.
This was one of my favorite overnight trips of the year. Definitely steep, but relatively gradual for a 4500 foot ascent. The steepest section is the bit going up toward monogram lake. I clocked 6300 feet of gain total and close to 14 miles round-trip.
The Lookout is in the National Forest and you can stay in it on a first come first serve basis. If you stay at Monogram Lake you will need backcountry permits since it’s in the national park.
