The Dalai Lama led the Kalachakra initiation in July and August 1983, with 10,000 people in attendance. This was after the Kalachakra Temple was built and the monastery was restored after the 1975 Kinnaur earthquake. In 1996, The Dalai Lama led the Kalachakra initiation in June and July, with 20,000 people in attendance. This was during the millennium of the monastery's existence.

The Kalachakra is a Buddhist deity that represents aspects of the Enlightened Mind. It is also the name of a Buddhist tantric treatise and a system of teachings and practices. The word "Kalachakra" means "Wheel of Time".

The Dalai Lamas have been closely associated with the Kalachakra since the 18th century, when the Seventh Dalai Lama began providing Kalachakra Initiations in Tibet.

The original monastery was severely damaged in the 1975 Kinnaur earthquake. Subsequent to its full restoration and additions.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at Tabo Monastery. In July and August 1983, he taught about the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas and led the Kalachakra initiation at Tabo.

Folk dancers of Lahaul and Spiti valley showcase performances of their dance forms in beautifully adorned traditional dresses on the 100th anniversary of the Tabo Monastery in Spiti Valley. Along with the celebration of its anniversary, a special ceremony of 'Kaalchakra' is also curated on this day.

The Tabo Monastery located on desolate, flat ground with an area of 6300 sq m, enclosed by a high boundary wall built with mud brick. During 1981-83, a new Du-khang (assembly hall) was built on the south -east of Chos-Khor for the Kalachakra teachings (a process of initiation and rejuvenation) from His Holiness the XIV the Dalai Lama of Tibet in 1983 and 1996.

The monastery temples house a priceless collection of manuscripts and thangkas (Buddhist scroll paintings), historical, exquisite statues in stuccos, frescos and murals depicting tales from the Mahayana Buddhist Pantheon. Every inch of wall is covered with fine paintings in astonishingly well-preserved condition.
