This abandoned children’s hospital was left behind years ago - but inside, parts of the building never truly went dark.
Lights dimly flicker in dark hallways. Emergency signs hum quietly from the ceilings. Systems once meant to guide families, patients, and staff continue to glow inside a place that’s otherwise silent and decaying. Walking through this hospital didn’t feel like exploring something forgotten - it felt like entering a space that was still awake, just waiting.
Long pediatric hallways stretch into darkness. Children’s murals still line the walls. Directional signage points toward emergency rooms, elevators, and services that no longer exist. Ceiling panels have collapsed, water damage has spread across entire floors, and debris now covers spaces that were once designed to feel safe. The contrast between what this place was built for and what it has become is impossible to ignore.
This abandoned hospital exploration focuses on the atmosphere and condition of the building as it exists today - documenting what remains, what’s decaying, and what still feels unsettlingly alive.
Let’s explore.
History: For decades, this former hospital served as a major pediatric and women’s healthcare facility for the region, providing emergency services, inpatient care, and specialized treatment for children and families. Located in Buffalo, New York, the hospital played a critical role in the community before officially closing in 2017, after Kaleida Health consolidated services and relocated operations to the newly built Oishei Children’s Hospital downtown. Following the closure, the original hospital complex was left vacant as long-term redevelopment plans slowly took shape. Portions of the property were later incorporated into the Elmwood Crossing project, while other sections of the abandoned healthcare facility remained unused. As maintenance declined, interior spaces deteriorated - ceilings collapsed, water damage spread, and once-secure medical corridors were left exposed to decay. Today, the abandoned sections of the former children’s hospital stand as a stark reminder of how quickly essential institutions can be left behind. What was once a place of care, urgency, and constant movement now exists as a quiet, decaying structure, with traces of its former purpose still visible throughout the building.
