After splitting from Sharad Pawar's NCP in July 2024 to join the BJP-led Mahayuti with eight MLAs, Ajit eyed a major announcement post-February 7 district council polls, via a key meeting at Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai or Pune.

Senior figures from both sides were aware; Ajit discussed it with cousin, Supriya Sul,e during the Pune-Pimpri polls. NCP(SP)'s Rajesh Tope confirmed the decision was finalized in Ajit's presence, with meetings held—only the reveal awaited zilla parishad results. Leader Ankush Kakade noted Ajit aimed to gift the reunion to Sharad Pawar for his December 12 birthday.
