Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been conducting live-fire naval drills in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway crucial to global oil transit. As part of the exercises — called “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz” — IRGC forces fired missiles and staged combat readiness training, temporarily closing parts of the strait for several hours. Tehran says the drills are intended to test naval and missile capabilities and to send a deterrent message amid rising tensions with the United States, even as indirect nuclear talks between the two sides continue.
