It was a summer morning, the sun shone gently, and I sat in the living room with my friend Michał, drinking coffee and talking about our future plans. Michał had just graduated, and I still had a year left, but we both had one common dream – to get a driver’s license. “Are you planning to get a driver’s license?” Michał asked, looking at me with a smile, as if he already knew what I was thinking. “Of course! I’ve wanted to have my own car and drive all over Poland for a long time,” I replied, laughing. “That’s great news! We can sign up for the same course – it will be more fun to have someone to celebrate successes with and commiserate over failures,” Michał suggested, and I agreed immediately.
A week later, we signed up for a driving course at the nearest school – our instructor was Mr. Andrzej, a strict man but with a good heart. The first theoretical classes were easy – we learned traffic signs, traffic rules, and first aid. We studied hard, did online exercises, and met in the evenings to review the most important information. “Once we pass the theoretical exam, we can start practical driving,” Michał said, full of enthusiasm. “I hope I won’t be afraid of the steering wheel,” I added, a little nervous – I had never sat behind the wheel of a car before, and the thought of driving on busy streets made me feel scared.
The first practical classes were full of oops moments. Mr. Andrzej inserted the key into the ignition, started the engine, and handed me the steering wheel: “Now please, first get comfortable, fasten your seatbelt, and start driving slowly.” I got comfortable, fastened my seatbelt, but when I pressed the gas pedal, the car suddenly moved forward and hit the parked car next to us. “Listen, slowly! You don’t have to rush,” Mr. Andrzej said, emotionless, but I was already devastated – I thought I had damaged the car and that I would never pass the exam. Michał, who was sitting in the back seat, laughed, but then quickly helped me: “Don’t worry, it’s just a small scratch – every beginner makes mistakes.”
Over time, driving became easier and easier. I learned to park, turn, drive on busy streets, and on the highway. Michał also had his problems – he always forgot to turn on the lights in fog, and once he even parked the car backwards. “Are you planning to get a driver’s license?” I shouted once, when Michał forgot the lights again, amused. “Yes, but I think I need a little more practice,” he replied, jokingly. For several months, we practiced every day – in the morning after work, in the evening after classes, even on weekends. Mr. Andrzej was our strict teacher, but he always encouraged us: “If you practice, you will pass the exam on the first try.”
The day of the exam was really stressful. First, we took the theoretical exam – we both passed with flying colors. Then came the practical exam. I went first – I drove around the city streets, parked, turned, and the examiner said nothing, which made me even more stressed. When I finished driving, the examiner said: “Congratulations, you passed!” I was so happy that I hit Michał on the arm. Then it was Michał’s turn – he also passed, even though he forgot to turn on the turn signal while driving. “Are you planning to get a driver’s license?” we asked each other after the exam, laughing. “We don’t plan anymore – we have them!” we replied together, raising our hands in joy. Now we have our own cars, we drive around Poland together, and every time we see someone learning to drive, we shout: “Are you planning to get a driver’s license? 😂” – it’s our little joke that we still remember today.
