(12 Sep 1977) RR7736A YACHTING ROUND-THE-WORLD RACE
A fleet of 15 yachts has sailed from England on the
first leg of a Round-the-World Race. They will spend
the next eight months sailing 27,000 miles with stops
at Cape Town, Auckland and Rio de Janeiro. The
crews face some of the toughest seas in the world - in
the Antarctic and around Cape Horn. Skippers
include veteran lone yachtswoman Claire Francis and
single-handed round-the-world race winner Robin
Knox-Johnston. This report looks at the background
of the race and the personalities involved.
